A Coast Guardsman mans an iced-up blinker light, United States

Gift of the Scanlan Family
Description:

Photograph. A Coast Guardsman standing behind an iced-up blinker light in a signal tower off the coast of Maine. Official caption on reverse: "3023. From: Public Relations Division / U.S. Coast Guard / Washington, D.C. Despite Ice the Messages are Sent. Winter is more than a pretty picture to this U.S. Coast Guardsman manning an iced up blinker light in a signal tower off the Maine coast. Winter means ice covered equipment and North Atlantic winds that pierce to the bone. Operating the light is Coast Guardsman James A. Emery of San Francisco, a chief signalman who has been in the Coast Guard more than eight years." Maine. No date
