Translation of official German caption on photo reverse: "After a successful night mission against the British Isle, this Do 217 was rammed by a British fighter on its return flight. While the Brit plunged, burning, into the sea, the Do 217, despite a twisted right propeller, wrecked motor nacelle, torn fuselage and destroyed tail assembly, was able to make it back to its home base. Channel coast, 12/2/43." English Channel. 12 February 1943
