Displaced Hungarians making their way back home from Mauthausen, Austria, 1945

Description:

Photograph. Displaced Hungarians--pulling large and small carts, pushing wheel-barrels, but mostly walking on foot with packs or bundles of food and clothing on their backs--making their way back home from Mauthausen, Austria. Official Caption: "23/8/45 Salzburg-Austria About 6000 Hungarians, including some 3500 Jews, are being moved from the Mauthausen displaced persons staging post by the Russians. The former deportees, forced workers and prisoners of war left Mauthausen--which was turned from a Nazi concentration camp into a stopover area for victims of the German aggression--pulling large and small carts, pushing wheel- barrels, but most trudging on foot with packs or bundles of food and clothing on their backs. They are now making the journey back to their homes, most of which are around Budapest. I.SB. staff photo through USIS Rome." Salzburg, Austria. 23 August 1945
