A Filipino man drives a two-wheeled, horse-drawn cart down a street in the Philippines in 1944

Gift of John M. Lynes Sr., from the Collection of The National WWII Museum
Description:

A Filipino man drives a two-wheeled, horse-drawn cart down a street. "A popular mode of conveyance in the Philippines are these two wheeled carts drawn by small horses or ponies. They are known as tartarillas, and on market days the roads are cluttered with them, loaded down with whole families. More often than not you will see the animal drawing the cart get balky and refuse to move at which time one of the men will get out and attempt to either cajole or force the animal to start up again."
