Gift of the Scanlan Family
Description:

Photograph. Three Marines covered in dirt and gunpowder sip coffee aboard a Coast Guard transport ship after a battle. Caption stamped in pink ink on photo reverse: "In rewriting captions please mention 'Coast Guard.'" Caption on reverse: "3349. From: Public Relations Division / U.S. Coast Guard / Washington, D.C. / Credit Line Must Read 'Official Coast Guard Photo.' COFFEE FOR THE CONQUERORS OF ENIWETOK. These Marines, begrimed and weary from two days and two nights of fighting, are typical of the conquerors of Eniwetok Atoll. Storming ashore from Coast Guard-manned landing craft, they swept Engebi Island away from the Japs in six hours and then went on to wipe out the Nips on Eniwetok. Here they are back on a Coast Guard-manned assault transport hungrily downing cups of hot coffee." Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands. 1944
