John Jay Hawkshead, Jr. was born on 2 January 1918 in New Orleans, Louisiana to John Jay Hawshead, Sr. (worked for Andrew Higgins as an accountant) and Corinne Morris Hawkshead in the Carrolton Neighborhood. John enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 349th Engineers in the PTO. Hawkshead served as a photographer with the 349th and was at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey; Dutch Harbor; Attu; Umnak; Adak; and Okinawa. During his service Hawkshead attained the rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Hawkshead passed away on 28 October 2008. The collection consists of over 300 photographs taken by Hawkshead during his service in the Aleutian Islands (Attu, Umnak, Adak, and Dutch Harbor) as well as on Okinawa.
