514.Photograph 'CinCPac 8013 26 February 1945 D-Day wreckage Stalled Marine tanks and jeeps of the 'Fighting Fourth' Division, oil drums and water cans litter the Iwo Jima beach on the first day of the battle. Bogged down in the soft volcanic ash, heavy equipment was the favorite target for Jap [Japanese] artillery, which had registered on the very spot where the Marines landed. The beaches were later covered with steel matting.' 26 February 1945

The Charles Ives Collection consists of 719 photographs from the Pacific Theater of WWII. Many of the photographs were taken between 1944 and 1945. Mr. Ives inherited the photographs from a friend from Marblehead, Massachusetts who served as an aviator in the Army Air Corps and discharged as a Major in 1945.
