Teacher reads to preschool-aged children, Greenbelt, Maryland, 25 May 1945

Description:

Photograph. Five preschool-aged children seated at a table listen to a teacher read the storybook 'The Funny Noise' by Romney Gay. Official Caption: "Rome, 5/25/45--Greenbelt: Typical planned community in the U.S.--Small children listen attentively during story hour in the nursery at Greenbelt. The school is run cooperatively by mothers who are working in war industries since their husbands are in the U.S. armed forces. The teacher is paid $25 a week. Town planning provides homes for moderate income families and helps to develop a full community life. In building Greenbelt and two similar American communities, much was done to encourage the growth of all town activities. Greenbelt families own and run their stores, debate their own problems in town meetings, form clubs and organizations that fulfill any social or educational needs. They partake actively in all sorts of recreational activities and, of course, elect their own local governing body.-OWI Photo--Serviced by Rome OWI (A List Out). Approved by appropriate military authority. 6392-6." Greenbelt, Maryland. 25 May 1945
