Military camp full of tents and cots in Fort Devons, Massachusetts in August 1943

Gift of Melissa Bourne, from the Collection of the National WWII Museum
Description:

Military camp full of tents and cots, Tent City, Fort Devens, Massachusetts, July/August 1943. Tent City was the staging area for the 488th Port Battalion. It was hot dusty in July and early August as we prepared for overseas shipment. Liberal leave was given to those who could go home I met the family at Chautauqua, NY for ten days leave. Three days after I returned we boarded a train in the late afternoon and moved to New York City where we boarded the Santa Rosa and during a night left NYC by morning we were part of a large convoy (in the fog) headed south along the coast and across the Atlantic Ocean to Africa.
